Skiathos is an island with rich vegetation, golden beaches and stunning coastline. Branches of pine forests and olive groves coincide with dunes to sclerophyllous vegetation and myrtles. Gullies with shady plane trees cut flourishing fragrant slopes thyme and oregano. Houses and hotels lie on the entire coastal area of the south of the island and the peninsula of Pounta which lies opposite the town of Skiathos. The entire length of the populated area you will find sandy beaches surrounded by pine trees that reach up to the sea. You will arrive by bus up to Koukounaries, the famous beach by the wide golden coast. There, you will meet the Strofilia Lake which delimits between the coastal hills. On the beach of Koukounaries and the lake, are restes rare birds during the migration season.
To other beaches, that are also good, like the famous Lalaria, you can go there by boat. With the same boat you will arrive next to the castle and after – 5 minutes walk – you will be at the deserted medieval city, where the descriptions and the heroes of local author Papadiamandis, come to life. The city bus will take you to the region of Xanemo and the Monastery of Evangelistrías. Near the monastery there is also the monastery of St. Charalabos, which was used as a base for war during the Greek revolution and the hero Alexandros Moraïtidis become a monk. You should also visit the Monastery of Kounistras – that protects the island – and then, after 40 minutes walk, the monastery of St. John. Another interesting monastery is that of KECHRIAS. The island of Skiathos is offered for hiking and for those who love nature. Autumn and spring are the best seasons to visit the island. In summer there are many. Skiathos has 5150 inhabitants – nearly all live in the city – and the area of the island is 48 square kilometers and 44 kilometers is the total coastal zone.
